Deze verfilming van het klassieke Griekse verhaal van Sophocles gaat over de jonge edelman Oedipus. In Thebes heerst een plaag, dat volgens het orakel een vergelding is voor de moord op koning Laius. Oedipus, Laius's zoon en opvolger doet er alles aan de schuldigen te vinden, maar de oude Tiresias drukt hem met zijn neus op de feiten. Een profetie dat Oedipus zijn vader moet vermoorden en zijn moeder moet trouwen blijkt er alles mee te maken te hebben.
